Henrico County, Virginia
Henrico County / officially Henrico County, is located in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 306,935. In 2019, the population was estimated at 330,818, making it the fifth most populous county in Virginia. Henrico County is included in the Greater Richmond region. There is no unincorporated community within Henrico County, therefore there is no unincorporated county town. Laurel, an unincorporated CDP, occupies this position.
Named after the settlement of Henricus, Henrico was first incorporated as the city of Henrico. In 1634 Henrico reorganized himself as the Henrico Shire, one of the original eight Virginia Shires. It is one of the oldest counties in the United States. The city of Richmond was officially part of Henrico County until 1842, when it became a completely independent city.
Present-day Henrico County surrounds the city of Richmond and surrounds it to the west, north, and east. The county is bounded by the Chickahominy River to the north and the James River and Richmond to the south.
Richmond Raceway is located in central Henrico County, just north of the Richmond city limits. The racetrack seats about 60,000 people and hosts two NASCAR race weekends of two races a year. Additionally, Richmond International Airport is located in the eastern part of Henrico County in Sandston. The county’s top private employers include Capital One, Bon Secours Richmond Health System, and Anthem.
