Piedmont Triad
The Piedmont Triad (or simply the Triad) is a north-central region of the US state of North Carolina that consists of the area in and around the three main parts: Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. This tight-knit group of cities is located in the Piedmont geographic region of the United States and forms the base of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem-High Point Statistical Area. As of 2012, the Piemonte Triad has an estimated population of 1,611,243, making it the 33rd largest combined statistical area in the United States.
The metropolitan area is connected by Interstates 40, 85, 73 and 74 and is served by the Piedmont Triad International Airport. Long known as one of the most important manufacturing and transportation centers in the southeastern United States, the Triad is also an important educational and cultural region and ranks highly in the history of the American civil rights movement.
The Triad is not to be confused with the “Triangle” region (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill), immediately to the east.
Winston Salem – Greensboro
Winston-Salem is a city located in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. With an estimated population of 247,945 in 2019, it is the second-largest municipality in the Piedmont Triad region, the fifth-most populous city in North Carolina, the third-largest metropolitan area in North Carolina, and the eighty-nine city of the United States. With a metropolitan population of 680,876, it is the fourth largest metropolitan area in North Carolina. Winston-Salem is home to the tallest office building in the region, 100 North Main Street, formerly known as the Wachovia Building and now known locally as the Wells Fargo Center.
Winston-Salem is known as the “Twin City” due to its dual heritage. “Camel City” is a reference to the city’s historic involvement in the tobacco industry with respect to R.J. Local Reynolds Tobacco Company. Many locals refer to the city as “Winston” in informal speeches. Winston-Salem is also home to many universities and institutions, notably Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University.
In 2012, CBS MoneyWatch named the city one of the top ten places to retire in the United States. Winston-Salem has seen strong growth and revitalization in the city center with hotels, restaurants, and apartments under construction.
