Middlesex County, Massachusetts
Middlesex County is located in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in the United States. As of 2019, the estimated population was 1,611,699, making it the 22nd most populous county in the United States and the most populous county in Massachusetts and New England. Middlesex County is one of the two US counties (along with Santa Clara County, CA) that are among the 25 highest family income and 25 most populous counties. As part of the 2010 National Census, the Commonwealth’s median population center for that year was geographically centered in Middlesex County, in the town of Natick at (42.272291 ° N 71.363370 ° W). (This should not be confused with the geographic center of Massachusetts, which is located in Rutland, in neighboring Worcester County.) Middlesex County is included in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area of the Census Bureau.
On July 11, 1997, the Massachusetts legislature voted to abolish the executive government of Middlesex County, primarily due to the county’s insolvency. Although Middlesex County continues to exist as a geographic boundary, it is used primarily as district jurisdictions within the legal system and for other administrative purposes, as an indicator of elections. Weather advisories from the National Weather Service (such as the severe thunderstorm warning) continue to be issued based on Massachusetts counties.

Boston is the capital and most populous city of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States and the 21st most populous city in the United States. The city proper covers 48.4 square miles (125 km2) with an estimated population of 692,600 in 2019, making it the most populous city in New England as well. It is the county seat of Suffolk (although the county government was dissolved on July 1, 1999). Boston is one of the oldest congregations in the United States, founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan settlers from the English city of the same name. It was the scene of several major events of the American Revolution, such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston. After American independence from Great Britain, the city remained an important port and manufacturing center, as well as a center for education and culture.
