Essex County, Massachusetts
Essex County is a county in the northeastern part of the US state of Massachusetts. It is part of the Greater Boston region (Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH Metropolitan Statistical Area). The largest city in the county of Essex is Lynn. The county is named after the English county of Essex.
It has two traditional county seats: Salem and Lawrence. Prior to the dissolution of the provincial government in 1999, Salem had jurisdiction over the Southern District of Essex, and Lawrence had jurisdiction over the Northern District of Essex, but these cities do not currently function as government seats. However, the county and counties continue to be recognized as administrative regions by various government agencies, who have collected vital statistics or resolved legal cases under these geographic divisions, and who must maintain records accordingly. The county has been designated an Essex National Heritage Area by the National Park Service.
