Sedgwick County (province code: SG) is located in the US state of Kansas. The county seat is Wichita, the most populous city in the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 498,365 with an estimate of 516,042 in 2019, making it the second most populous county in Kansas.

Located in south-central Kansas on the Arkansas River, Wichita began as a trading post on the Chisholm Trail in the 1860s and was incorporated as a city in 1870. nicknamed “Cowtown.”
In the 1920s and 1930s, businessmen and aviation engineers founded aircraft manufacturers in Wichita, including Beechcraft, Cessna, and Stearman Aircraft. The city became an aircraft manufacturing center known as “The Air Capital of the World”. Textron Aviation, Learjet, Airbus and Spirit AeroSystems continue to operate design and manufacturing facilities in Wichita, and the city continues to be a major hub for the US aviation industry.Wichita is also home to McConnell Air Force Base and the National Airport Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower, the largest airport in Kansas.
As an industrial center, Wichita is a regional center for culture, media, and commerce. It is home to several major universities, museums, theaters, parks, shopping centers, and entertainment venues, most notably the Intrust Bank Arena and the Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center. The city’s Old Cowtown Museum has historical artifacts and displays the early history of the city. Wichita State University is the third largest postsecondary institution in the state.
